Interactive Read Aloud Tips

Preview

  • Previewing a book before reading helps set up your child’s thinking.

  • It usually involves looking at the front and back covers and maybe a few story pages.

  • Take a minute to have your child think about what might happen in this book and why.

Think

  • During reading, stop every once in awhile to check in on your child’s thinking. React to the story events.

  • Ask questions. Make predictions about what will happen next.

  • Think about not only what is happening, but why it might be happening and how.

Talk

  • When completing a book, take a minute or two to talk about what the charactered learned.

  • What did the author want us to know? Is there something we can learn from this book?

  • Evaluate the book. Do you want to hear it again on another day? Why did you like it?
