How to Find Warm Up Poems

Here at JOYcabulary we always like to pair a lesson with a warm up poem. You can read our post about it here. A colleague recently asked me, “How do you find the poems to go with your read alouds?” Good question, Jamie! I use a few methods for finding related poems:


Warm Up poems get our students ready to explore the topic of the read aloud selection. They activate schema, expose children to figurative language, provide fluency practice, and are just FUN!

Linda Szakmary has five decades of experience working as a classroom teacher, a district curriculum writer, a district facilitator of K-5 writing, and as a county K-8 literacy coach. She now works for Sullivan and Orange-Ulster BOCES as a content specialist. A poetry advocate and a lover of words and children’s literature, she has been a presenter at several state-wide conferences on vocabulary and writing.
