How to Find Warm Up Poems
Here at JOYcabulary we always like to pair a lesson with a warm up poem. You can read our post about it here. A colleague recently asked me, “How do you find the poems to go with your read alouds?” Good question, Jamie! I use a few methods for finding related poems:
Ye old Google: enter ‘topic name’ + ‘poem’ + ‘for kids’ or I just Google my favorite poets
Poet and teacher Amy Ludwig Vanderwater’s website, Poem Farm. Love her!
I peruse my stack of poetry book anthologies. Here are some I reach for over and over again:
Read-Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young by Jack Prelutsky
The Random House Book of Poetry for Children by Jack Prelutsky
Sing a Song of Popcorn: Every Child's Book of Poems edited by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers
All the Small Poems and Fourteen More by Valerie Worth
Warm Up poems get our students ready to explore the topic of the read aloud selection. They activate schema, expose children to figurative language, provide fluency practice, and are just FUN!
